Iran opens new air base in northwestern Urmia City  

The Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) launched a new air base in the northwestern City of Urmia near the border with Turkey on Wednesday.

TABNAK, Sep, 11:  The facility named ‘Martyr Major General Mahmoudabadi Airbase’ was officially launched by the IRGC Commander Major General Hossein Salami.

Iran faces threats in its northwest territory from enemies and elements opposed to the Islamic Revolution, said a senior IRGC Commander  Brigadier General Ali Akbar PourJamshidian present in the opening ceremony.

The inauguration of the new air base is meant to boost Iran’s defense potentials, adding that the move will be very fruitful for the country and its military forces, he noted.

In recent years, Iran has vastly expanded and developed its military strength and the country’s military specialists and engineers have achieved notable advancements in producing a diverse array of domestically developed equipment, fostering self-reliance within the armed forces.

Officials from Iran affirm their commitment to enhancing the nation's military capabilities, emphasizing their defensive nature.

Moreover, Iran continues to prioritize the modernization and self-sufficiency of its military capabilities, particularly in the face of regional and global security challenges. Its unveiling of new defense achievements is expected to further solidify its position as a formidable power in the realm of air defense.
